Map 1: Project Location Map
Freeport Bridge
The project location map shows the location of the project in respects to Pennsylvania and in respect to Pittsburgh, PA.

Map 2: Shows Existing conditions of the Freeport area
Freeport Bridge
The Freeport Bridge connects PA Route 356 from Westmoreland County to Butler and Armstrong Counties across the Allegheny River. The northern bridge approach consists of a series of thirteen (13) intersections and three (3) weave areas connecting PA Route 356 with Freeport Road (State Route 2017); PA Route 128 and Freeport Borough; Laneville; other local side streets and a number of business and residential driveways. Traffic flow directions are indicated by arrows on Map No. 1.

Map 3: Proposed Project Design:
Freeport Bridge
The proposed design relocates PA Route 356 to the north side of Buffalo Creek. A new bridge over Buffalo Creek approximately 400-feet downstream from the existing Laneville Bridge connects PA Route 128 and Freeport Borough. One traffic signal system would be added at the PA Route 356/Freeport Road intersection and one traffic signal at the new PA Route 356/Buffalo Creek intersection. Realigned Buffalo Street and 2nd Street at the south end of the proposed Buffalo Creek bridge would connect with a T-intersection. The Laneville Bridge would be closed and removed. Second Street from Buffalo Street to 324 2nd Street will remain open from Buffalo Street with a dead-end near the 2nd Street Playground. The existing Freeport Bridge main span over the Allegheny River will be rehabilitated with a full deck replacement. The approach spans on each end will be reconstructed.

Map 4: Shows Proposed Project Design:

The Map to the left is a closer view of the proposed design for the northern bridge approach. See map 3 for a description.

Typical Section 1: Bridge Section:

Freeport Bridge
The typical cross section for the Freeport Bridge over the Allegheny River will consist of four travel lanes (Two lanes in each direction) with a shared bike path/sidewalk on the downstream side. The typical section is shown as if the driver is going northbound towards Freeport.

Origin & Destination Study:

PennDOT and its design team evaluated traffic patterns and travel times within the project area by conducting an origin-destination (O&D) Study. CLICK HERE for more information.
